I still have absolutely no idea how I'm going to paint the black vest/suit/reverend-priest outfit thing that makes up his body, shading something that's already black is VERY difficult and will apparently involve the use of blues and purples on top of the dark gray I have, along with some subtle grays to make it look decent, as was suggested to me by a friend...but I still've never tried it before. We'll see how it turns out when I get the time.
I actually think you've got enough of the red tinge to it already, to be honest. I was just thinking a little bit of the other colors blended in real faintly would be great.

About the lightbulb, I don't think it's bad at all. A lack of a frame of reference (ie: no background or metal piece) is probably making it seem worse than it is. I really do like the subtle points of illumination you have around the upper bulb (not the highlights themselves, the orangish stuff), as it brings out the curvature of the bulb nicely. It's simply amazing for having been done without a reference!

Kinda off topic but you could do worse than take a look at Paintshop Pro.. it's since been bought by Corel

$99 for the full version; I've used it myself most of the time (been a fan since the original paintshop pro 1)

Missed yesterday, I know, was asleep most of the day (have had lots of work to finish ).

Here's todays, 30 minutes, still trying to experiment with things. Obviously, this is a little different than the others.

dude. lol. i like the shading and the apparent sketching very much. dont know what to think of it though. all in all, even if i think the concept is rather ODD, i'd have to give it the thumbs up. great shading with nice regard for the light source throughout the project, and well balanced colors for a nice dampened medium that helps the "grotesque" image come along.

Heh, while the first few sketches you've seen and might see over the next little while have been/will be more realistic, I hate sticking to things that exist already, and as this thread gets updated with more and more images, you should count on more...oddities, as opposed to more of the "real".

...looking at that one a little harder it's too "bubbly" for my tastes, going to try and get in a second tonight that's a bit more...not bubbly.

Thumbs up

Well, I can say one thing for sure. You've got the groundwork laid for 2D animation. You've got a very strong sense of volume in the little odd-ball. It's a point my 2D teachers always try to drive home: when animating you care nothing for the shapes of things. It's the volumes that matter and will make/break a piece.

I also am glad to see the loose flow of the sketch lines. There's nothing more relaxing (and surprisingly helpful) than loose sketching. 'Sketching from the shoulder, not the wrist' if you don't mind me quoting other teachers. lol

My only real complaint here is the fact that the lighting is a static white in color. It's not so much that it's only one color, since it is just a quick sketch afterall, but the fact that it's only white. White is a rather boring color, and for something as interesting as this little fellow, I think you could have done better.

Still, the strengths of it overshadow that weakness, so it's an overall thumbs up from me.

I know you dont like when people dont give you constructive critism but still:
this is very nice.
PS: it is possible I just say this since im not that good on painting (see my thread ), and i find it hard to judge something if it is a sketch, as we do not know if You know that you might have made some mistakes you would correct after.

anyways, very creative

EDIT: you missed a day(or two) *yell*

*yells at pie*

If I may, can I request a series of "transition" images that show the work from beginning to end? It would greatly help my learning how to do this myself.

Thanks

I'd like to apologize for not having updated this in a while, I've had more work than I care to think about and I'm also trying to finish the wallpaper I've been working on (which you'll all see when finished).

Actionjack: You can request all you want, but chances are I won't really acknowledge it. Last time I offered to do requests everyone was like "Do me in a red striped shirt with blue shoes and a charmander behind me!!!" and I was like..."How about no."

Lasareth: Yes, I'll do that for you. I know things like that've helped me immensely in my short time using photoshop. I'm off to work on the wallpaper now, and will take screens of it's process as I remember to do so. Expect frequent updates starting Wednesday, by then I should be free to work as I was originally.

Should try more imaginative colors.

Play around with layers and test colors.

Damn damn damn. I'm terribly sorry I haven't been updating this as I said I would, drowning in real life bullpoop (to be polite) lately, haven't hardly had time to open up photoshop period. Thankfully, I managed to get most all the work I'd had piled up finished, and managed this quick sketch just now:

No idea what/who it's supposed to be, just playing around with brushes and trying out different texturing ideas for some awkward contrast. Tried to kinda go for a sort of dirty "What the hell?" look. 45 minutes
